The Xbox Indie Game Demo Event is currently running through December 31, offering developers the chance to showcase their in-development games. Some of the titles featured have definitely caught my attention, and I’ve been diving into a few of them. One game that immediately intrigued me based solely on its name is Cosmorons. This is where the game introduces the death-and-rebirth loop, a classic roguelike mechanic. As always, a roguelike’s story is key to keeping players invested. I’m curious to see how Section 13 develops its narrative alongside its gameplay.
Then there’s Arctic Awakening, which immediately reminded me of Firewatch, the excellent first-person adventure by Campo Santo. Arctic Awakening nails the atmosphere and blends its story seamlessly with gameplay. The game begins with you, playing as Kai, a pilot navigating a stormy sky with his friend Donovan and a mandatory companion, a drone named Alfie. There’s a sense of mystery surrounding Kai, particularly his strained relationship with his children and the disaster that wiped out his home. After a crash landing in the frozen wilderness, the game really starts.
The early setup of Arctic Awakening is compelling. As Kai, you explore the crash site, taking in the disorienting, snowy landscape with wreckage scattered about. The dialogue between Kai and Alfie is genuinely funny, with Alfie acting like a reluctant therapist to Kai’s grumbling attitude. This relationship adds a nice touch of humor to what’s otherwise a survival-focused narrative. I’m eager to uncover more about Kai’s past and the larger story as the game progresses.
It’s great to see Xbox taking an active role in promoting indie games like this. This event is a fantastic opportunity for developers to get their games in front of a wider audience and gather valuable feedback early in the development process. While PC gamers have had access to Steam’s Early Access for years, having something similar on Xbox is a significant step forward. It’s been exciting to explore these indie titles, and I’m looking forward to diving into even more before the event ends on December 31.
